Which one of you was the jerk who’d take a Rubik’s Cube, mix it all up, and make it almost impossible for the average human being to solve? I have terrible memories of those things – spending hours trying to figure out what it would take my senior high buddy about five minutes. Of course, fate would have it that some awesome group of developers would take the Rubik’s Cube and completely base it on one of the most twisted brain teasers ever. When we say twisted, we literally mean these puzzles take a few turns to solve.
The folks from doPanic have created a multidimensional puzzle game that focuses on getting a glowing orb (your light) to a goal. It sounds pretty easy, and skilled players will solve puzzles in as few moves as possible, but once you start spinning the cube…things get a little Cubetastic.
Anyone who loves puzzles or a challenge will love Cubetastic because it requires you to think across multiple planes. Just like a Rubik’s Cube, you spin pieces of the cube until you align matching colors so you can reach your destination. You can trace your finger all in one go across a path if you can solve the puzzle in one move, but that might not be so easy as you get farther in the game. It’s pretty tricky at times, and the mind-bending puzzles may have multiple solutions (in fewer/more turns).
Cubetastic first arrived on the iPad, but the recently launched Mac version is just as enjoyable. With the mouse it’s easy to lean back and flip the cube around with the left and right mouse buttons. Both the iPad and the Mac version of the game are essentially the same once parity updates roll out, featuring all of the familiar beautiful colors and graphics that not only set the game’s atmosphere, but provide additional challenges later on.
While all 150+ levels should you keep those fingers busy for a while, we haven’t even gotten into those tasty special items, or the fact that Cubestatic will soon be available on the PC as well. Available now for both Mac and iPad (the iPad version will be updated soon to support new features), Cubetastic allows for multiple player profiles, new levels, the ability to challenge other players, and pick-up & put-down gameplay that makes it easy to jump into some quick gameplay when you have time. Just having launched on the App Store for $3.99, it’s the most recent update (a new iPad version will arrive soon at $2.99), and we suggest you pick up either version and rate it five stars: we promise it won’t disappoint.
