Safari 5 is going live. The new (and somehow unexpected after no mention at the keynote) Safari update features an improved Javascript engine (30% faster), a Reader button in the Address Bar and improved HTML5 support.
The new Javascript engine called “Nitro” loads pages faster using DNS prefetching. Apple says that Safari 5 runs Javascript 30% faster than Safari 4, 3% faster than Chrome 5.0 and twice as fast as Firefox.
As for HTML5 support, Safari 5 introduces full screen playback and closed captions for videos. Other HTML5 features include: HTML5 Geolocation, HTML5 AJAX History, HTML5 sectioning elements, HTML5 forms validation, HTML5 draggable attribute, HTML5 Ruby, EventSource and WebSocket.
Safari 5 also introduces the much rumored “Reader” feature, which just like Instapaper seems to be able to pull text from an article and display it in an elegant, clutter free layout.
Last, Safari 5 finally comes with extensions, which developers can start building today using open web technologies such as HTML5, CSS and Javascript. To enhance security of extensions Apple has decided to sandbox them with a digital certificate signed from Apple. There’s also a new feature built in Safari called “Extension Builder” which will help developers create and test addons directly within the app.

When Safari 5 detects an article, users can click on the Reader icon in the Smart Address Field to display the entire article for clear, uninterrupted reading with options to enlarge, print or send via email.
Powered by the Nitro JavaScript engine, Safari 5 on the Mac runs JavaScript 30 percent faster than Safari 4, three percent faster than Chrome 5.0, and over twice as fast as Firefox 3.6.* Safari 5 loads new webpages faster using Domain Name System (DNS) prefetching, and improves the caching of previously viewed pages to return to them more quickly.
