Oracle’s OpenJDK Java build for OS X, Sans Apple

Although they promised, Apple has not yet contributed its proprietary Java Runtime for the Oracle Open Source JVA, Open JDK project - although a French developer has created the first test builds of OpenJDK binary for Mac OS X.

Henri Gomez, a French open source project programmer, announced the availability of his OpenJDK Java build for Mac OS X 10.6 “Snow Leopard” this weekend, according to TechEye.

We’re working on a continuous build of OpenJDK 1.7 for OS/X (Snow Leopard). There was some discussions on OpenJDK BSD ports mailing list but I still didn’t see any Apple commitment … as with everybody on OS/X community, I’m impatient.

Is Oracle being unfair to Apple? They only announced the move two weeks ago - Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, Bertrand Serlet, said “The best way for our users to always have the most up to date and secure version of Java will be to get it directly from Oracle.”

In moving ahead, Apple will contribute most of the key components, tools and technologies required for the implementation on Mac OS X.

Apple’s Java technology will be made available to open source developers by OpenJDK so they can access and contribute.
