Apple Highlights “Apps for Health”

Following the release of iOS 8.0.2 and the restoration of HealthKit functionalities for third-party apps, Apple has started highlighting iPhone apps that integrate with iOS 8’s Health dashboard with a dedicated section on the App Store.

Experience an entirely new approach to wellness where your fitness app can talk to your calorie tracker, your doctor can be automatically notified of updates to your health data, and great apps work together for a healthier you. This handpicked collection highlights the best fitness, nutrition, and medical apps customized for iOS 8.

The section appears to be a work in progress, as it only includes a few apps that have been updated with Health support. Apple is highlighting MyFitnessPal and Noom Coach for calorie tracking, but not Lifesum; other notable picks include FitStar (a popular fitness trainer app), WebMD, and the Omvana meditation app.

All of the featured apps integrate with Health’s unified dashboard to write and read data. MyFitnessPal is able, for instance, to write calories and amount of carbohydrates for a specific day, while Omvana can request to read a user’s heart rate to provide better and more personalized meditation techniques.

Apple’s new collection of Health apps will likely get updated over the week as the App Store editorial team chooses more apps that have been updated with HealthKit integration. Apps that work exclusively with Apple’s Health app, such as FitPort, will require iOS 8.0.2 or later to be downloaded from the App Store.
