Stainless browser: want Google Chrome on Mac?

Google Chrome, what a great browser. Fast, simple, sleek interface: you could say it’s a Mac app. Unfortunately, Google Chrome is available only on Windows and we should be able to get the Mac version this fall.

But there’s still a chance to have Google Chrome run under Leopard, and it’s not Chromium. Have you ever heard of Stainless?

Developed by Mesa Dynamics, Stainless was born as a proof of concept but the devs decided to keep on working on it and it has almost reached 1.0 version. Stainless.app is also known as “the Google Chrome for Mac because of its main feature, multi-session.

Just as Google Chrome enables you to handle opened tabs as single processes, you can open “single session tabs”: call it single-session tabs or multi-processing, you can now log in the same site  different credentials in separate tabs at the same time.

This thanks to a  private cookie storage system, to session-aware bookmarks that remember the session in which they were saved.

That’s right, with Stainless you can tweet with all of your accounts (if you have more) or manage your ebay accounts (just like me) from within the same session.

The browser is based on Webkit, the same HTML rendering technology as Apple’s Safari. The company and its multi-process design was inspired not only by Chrome, but also by a web-wrapper application called Hypercube. Hypercube is able to move widgets, gadgets and Flash movies  to your desktop. The way Hypercube is structured, inspired the company to try out a browser.

Stainless is a great piece of browser, regularly updated and with a large community supporting it.
