PadEdit: iPad-optimized IDE On Your Server

The iPad comes with a great default browser, built on top of another great technology called Webkit. Safari for iPad makes browsing from a tablet feel good, and I haven’t find a single alternative in the App Store worth replacing Apple’s default app.

If there’s a webapp that showcases the great capabilities of Safari for iPad, that’s PadEdit.

PadEdit is a browser-based IDE that you can install on your server and access from desktop computers, iPad, iPhone and Android devices. If you’re a developer that wants to log in your website from anywhere using a fully scalable UI and don’t mind even being able to integrate Coda Clips with it - heck, you should consider go download PadEdit now. It’s free, and looks beautiful.

Check out the demo video below.

“What are PadEdit’s requirements?

PadEdit requires PHP 4.0 or higher to be present on the web server. We’ve tested PadEdit with a LAMP stack mostly, but would be interested to hear if it works on a Windows-based stack (that has support for PHP). Any editable files and folders on the server should have permissions of at least (octal) 644 in order for PadEdit to work.

Is it secure?

PadEdit, firstly, is password protected. That password is stored on your server in the form of an MD5 hash, a secure way of storing things that shouldn’t be kept as plain text. Second, PadEdit only edits files in the folder you drop PadEdit into (and below). PadEdit won’t navigate to other folders on your server.”
