FaceTime for iPod touch Details

We’ve talked about the possibilities of FaceTime on the iPod touch before thanks to the initial rumors and the Boy Genius Report, but this evening 9 to 5 Mac has the skinny on how exactly Apple plans to implement the currently phone-based feature.

FaceTime will be ran as an application on the iPod touch. If you guys are familiar with the green messaging icon, imagine that with a video cam instead. It’s hopefully real.

Your FaceTime account will be based on your Apple ID. You’ll log in with your iTunes credentials, but you’ll have the option to set up a separate username for use during FaceTime, including how you’ll show up on someone’s caller ID.

This is actually pretty interesting because when it is all said and done, Apple users (and FaceTime is being Open-Sourced for other platforms) will be able to call each other without using a traditional or cell phone line.  Bad news for AT&T.

Apple could theoretically put in a VoIP gateway and have a Skype-type of service within a year. That would be interesting.
