He’s Acer chairman JT Wang, speaking with the Economic Daily News about the iPad market share, and how it will drop from the current 100% (or so) to 20% / 30% because of its “closed” nature and other “open” products that will be released starting this fall.
Acer is also the same company which earlier this year said they were not interested in creating a tablet (although they could) because it didn’t fit their business. Fast forward 7 months, and now Acer seems interested in developing such a product. Oh, how things change in this tech world.
Anyway, Mr. Wang says that Android (which is open) will eventually eat most part of the tablet market, currently owned by Apple. Digitimes reports:
“He also cited a research report indicating that the market share for Android smartphones has already surpassed that of iOS models, and noted that according to past experience, a closed platform will eventually lose to an open one, and that he believes Android simply needs a little more time before it turns strong, the paper added.”
I’m so looking forward to Acer’s tablet. You know, a 7-months-in-the-making iPad competitor must be a really interesting device to keep an eye on.
