Easy, nerds. I know that there are hundreds of apps that let you turn the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch into a portable hard drive - that’s why I never featured them. There are just too many of them out in the App Store.
So what about Simple Drive? It’s simple, it’s got a nice UI and doesn’t overwhelm you with tons of extra features you don’t even need. Unlike all those other apps, it’s elegant.
That’s why I downloaded it and I have so far enjoyed using it.
You fire up Simple Drive. You make sure the iPhone and the computer are on the same local network. You hit the giant Start button at the bottom of the app, Simple Drive displays the device’s local IP address. You paste that into Safari’s address bar - boom, you can browse and upload files.
The app doesn’t do anything more than this, and that’s exactly why it’s great - it’s freakin’ simple. The only additional little feature is: you can shorten the local IP address to something like tyx.me/6p. Easier to remember, you type that and Safari (or the Finder, or Transmit, or whatever software you use to access local machines) opens it.
Simple Drive is $0.99 in the App Store. Nice find of the week.
