Who said books on the iPad are lame? No seriously, because after this one you’ll have to fire up your credit card and buy this book in the App Store. Perhaps you’ve already heard about it in the past few days, but we’ve had the chance to put our hands on a copy of Alice for iPad, a recently released book which runs on the iPad but it’s not available in iBooks.
What?
Simple, it’s an app listed in the Books category. As I predicted some weeks ago, this category is turning out to be more profitable for some developers as it assures more exposure and allows them to be more creative and independent. I also have to admit that many books on the iBooks store actually looks lame, with lack of pictures, wrong table of contents and other errors combined with that justified text. Not good.
Alice for iPad is here to remind us how books for the new generation of media should looks like.
This app is “just a book”, but it’s got so many interesting and great looking touches that it’s impossible to not be fascinated by it. Illustrations are beautiful and colorful, typography is good, sometimes even better than iBooks’ one. But the coolest thing of Alice for iPad is that it’s a real visual experience, because while there’s no support for the page curl effect, developers have enriched the book with moving objects and various elements on screen. They move just as you tilt the iPad, and it’s just great to see this stuff happen when reading. It’s new, it’s fresh.
Available both in a lite (free) version and paid one in the App Store, you should check it out if you want to see where books for iPad are headed.
