Sometimes a new app comes around and changes the way you interact with a device. It happened before. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be here always living on the edge of the App Store looking for new promising pieces of software. The app we’re previewing today is more than promising, it’s a big leap forward, at least for me.
My Artists has replaced iPod.app on my iPhone.
Being a preview, I don’t want (and can’t) talk about all the features of this application, but I can say that My Artists makes consuming music on the iPhone a much more enjoyable and engaging experience. Basically, this app enhances your music library in a way you haven’t seen before. You get album artworks for every artist / album, even if you don’t have them in your iTunes library. Thanks to the built-in download system (which thus requires an active internet connection, not a problem with the iPhone) you’ll always be able to get rich previews and info about the artist you’re listening to.
That’s right, you get information about artists, just like an embedded Wikipedia. You don’t have to leave the app, it’s there. And it’s got links to band members, albums and the sort of additional content you might want to find out about your favorite band. Not to mention Related Artists, which is way more useful than Apple’s Genius. But there’s a lot more, and we can’t wait to review the app as soon as it’s available.
My Artists is currently in beta stage and should be submitted to Apple soon. We’ll keep you posted about it. In the meantime, get your iTunes library ready.
