You can utilize recent iterations of the iPod touch for VoIP, but what if you actually turn it into a cellphone on a completely different carrier? Engadget uncovered two devices today that may allow you to go mobile.
The first device is the Chinese Yosion Apple Peel. Powered by an Infineon baseband chip, you can get voice calling and even text messaging on the device. The catch is that you’ll have to have a Jailbroken iPod. Engadget couldn’t dig up anymore info, but they suspect the device will launch at a price point between $44 and $74, though I doubt any of you would want something this sketchy.
Less sketchy is the ZTE Peel for Sprint. ZTE’s 3G router brought to life through the FCC reveal that this black slip-on is a perfect shape for the rumored iPod touch we’ve been seeing. Powered by Qualcomm, perhaps Sprint might continue their Apple crusade by targeting the latest eye catching device Cupertino dazzles us with. Boy Genius Report updates that the ZTE Peel is clearly a mobile hotspot with integrated GPS and support for up to 5 Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
We’re a little short on information with these products, but to save costs, would you prefer to use a data-only device? Let us know in the comments.
