Eddy Cue Shares Apple Music Details on Twitter

In a series of tweets, Apple’s Eddy Cue has shared some interesting details on the transition to Apple Music, iTunes Match integration, and availability of the service in the iOS 9 beta.

As previously confirmed by Apple, Apple Music will integrate with the existing iTunes Match functionality that allows subscribers to upload up to 25,000 of their own songs to Apple’s cloud storage service, which will match them and make them available for listening in the Music app. Apple Music is launching with the same 25,000 song limit on Tuesday, but the company is working on expanding to 100,000 files by the launch of iOS 9 later this year. By comparison, Google’s Play Music currently allows users to upload up to 50,000 of their own tracks for free.

Second, Apple had previously stated that current Beats Music subscribers will be prompted to move their subscription to Apple Music. Details on the transition aren’t clear (specifically, whether current subscriptions will be moved to the end of the three-month free trial or if they’ll become active on June 30), but Cue says that the process will be handled by an update to the Beats Music app for iOS 8.

Lastly, Cue confirms that a new seed of the iOS 9 developer beta will be required to add Apple Music integration. Given the release of iOS 9 beta 2 five days ago, it’s not clear if a new seed with Apple Music support will also be released on June 30.

iOS 8.4 with Apple Music support is expected to be released on Tuesday, June 30. According to former Beats Music CEO and current Apple Music senior director Ian Rogers, customers should “make a note” to upgrade to iOS 8.4 at 8 AM PT, two hours ahead of Apple’s usual schedule for iOS updates and one hour before the debut of Beats 1 on Apple Music.
