The Safari browser on the iPad is okay, but it leaves so much to be desired on that big, beautiful screen. Markus Schmeiduch decided to mock up what Google Chrome might look like on the iPad, and does an amazing job of describing features, gestures, all while providing drool worthy photographs. If there was an iPad application to lust for, this particular iteration of Google Chrome would be it.
A good browser has to have tabs, and unlike Safari’s page switching, Google Chrome on the iPad would provide us with what should have been there all along. Markus admits he enjoys Opera’s solution for the iPhone (I do too), but boy would it be great to fly through websites without having to reload pages. Tabs are a must have.
Google Chrome already has the ability to sync bookmarks between browsers on different machines, so of course you’d have that ability on the iPad. Taking a design cue from Google’s mobile standards, you’d have the ability to easily tap through multiple websites with a simple pop-up tray. I absolutely love this. Google, you gotta hire this guy.
With those designs in place, you gotta have great gestures. Perhaps a three fingered swipe to go back and forth between web pages, or universal gesture to return to your previous search (like Safari on Mac) could be implemented. Markus wishes Apple would adopt a set of standards for the browser for everyone to enjoy.
Google Chrome on the iPad is a pipe dream at the moment, and quite frankly, Apple probably wouldn’t allow it. But if this became a reality, I’d really love to make it my default browser.
