I downloaded this app last week, but it turns out it’s been around for quite some months in the App Store. Color Splash by Pocket Pixels is a simple iPhone app (iPad version is available, too) that allows you to highlight areas of a photo to make them black & white, or make the entire photo black & white and only set certain areas to be colored.
It’s a very cool effect that it’s made easy by iOS multi-touch technology and would otherwise be a rather difficult task for the average user on Adobe’s Photoshop.
The developers describe this as a “dramatic effect” and, indeed, it adds some sort of “cinematic” style to your photos. It looks neat. All you have to do is load up a photo from your camera roll into the app (or take a new one), select the brush tool and start highlighting the areas you’d like to keep colors on. You can switch between b&w and color mode with the tap of a button, pan & zoom to have better control over the desired areas of a photo and adjust the brush size from a popup menu.
In the Settings, you can save your current session and load a previous one, save the image and share your creation on Twitter, Facebook and Flickr. You can also email and copy to the clipboard.
The best part? The app’s available at $0.99 on the App Store. You can give a try to the iPad version as well, but I installed the iPhone one as it’s the device I use to take photos every day. Cool, and simple.
