Ringtone creation on the iPhone is still new to the App Store; there are several out but only a few that have a great UI and functionality. Wake Apps’ Dring arrived last week and does it look beautiful and work wonderfully.
Dring has a finely tuned, gorgeous retina display UI that lets you customize and create your own ringtones right from your iPhone with sliders, toggle switches and buttons that look real. I can almost feel the textures under my fingertips and they lay perfectly on top of on a wood grain background. Every little detail looks absolutely great, even the spinning tape recorder wheels that come up after hitting record look authentic to a time of analog that’s long lost. Julien Martin is the magic man behind the UI of Dring, I saw some dribbble shots of Dring months ago was drooling then.
Here’s how easy Dring works: Tap the ‘music’ button and search your iPhone’s music library or use the built-in microphone feature to create your own recording; maybe a voice message, your talking cat, or your Mac’s Text to Speech function. Drag the grey horizontal slider to position what part of the song you want using pop-up time indicators then move the vertical silver bars to cue the exact moment you want to start recording (up to 40 seconds). Touch the ‘Play’ button to check your adjustments and even use the ‘Fade’ button for intro and outro fading. After you have it set, push ‘Save’ and Dring does the rest. When it’s completed, you have options to watch an in-app video about how to access your saved ringtone or share your new ringtone via email, Facebook, or Twitter. You can access the saved files via iTunes under ‘Devices’ (when plugged in) then click the Apps tab in the main window.
Here’s something else Dring does - it has a unique Remix feature that lets you mix both your music and recording into a single ringtone; once you have a recording, toggle both the music and microphone switches on and push play to hear your ringtone, remixed with a recording, very cool and original, then again push ‘Save’ and Dring will do the rest.
There should be a small update coming anytime to address some instances of crashing and bugs with devices running iOS 4.x; I have yet to encounter a crash myself. There is also a Lite version currently being processed and will be available soon on the App Store. Overall, it’s a simple yet very fun app with a twist, I mean remix, and it is one of the best looking iPhone apps I’ve seen in quite a while.
Dring is available right now in the App Store for $.99.
