New Music Notifications with Nomis

We cover lots of music apps on MacStories, we even had a Roundup at the end of 2010. What can we say, we’re all big audiophiles here at MSHQ. Today we’re showing you another music app, but this one is unique and a first to the app store. It’s called Nomis, by Taprockets - an independent company in Germany - and it reminds you of new releases for all your favorite music artists. It’s very easy and simple to use.

When you first launch Nomis, it compiles your artist list according to the music saved on your iPhone (or iPod Touch). When it’s done (and it’s very fast), it shows you a vertical scrolling list with album artwork and a note containing titles of the new singles or albums to the iTunes Music Store. When a new song or album is available, it adds a red ‘NEW’ corner badge and displays them at the top. Tap the artwork or the words and it slides over to reveal an iTunes-like interface but with a unique UI like the rest of the app. It contains similar interactive elements with links to the albums or individual tracks.

Nomis also lets you instantly preview a song like iTunes;  tap the track number and it has a similar animation to iTunes. If you want to purchase the song or the album, tap the price button and it reveals a green iTunes link. Tap again and it launches the iTunes.app on your iPhone. Nomis also uses Apple’s Push notification system to display an icon badge telling you how many new releases are available. You’ll never miss a release again!

Nomis has a very nostalgic icon and user interface. The app has a lot of ‘old school’ details with wood and chrome effects, shiny buttons, square edges and lots of brown colors. These attributes are all reminiscent of the music technology of the past. It makes me want to cover my floors with shag carpet, turn up the 8-Track Hi-Fi stereo and rock out with my retro Marshall headphones. Nomis easter egg: pull the screen down in list view to reveal some 70s technology!

Nomis is very easy to use, and works well with what it does - showing you new tracks from your favorite artists. It’s a nice addition to any music-based iOS folder.

Nomis is $1.99 in the App Store and is for the iPhone and iPod Touch, iOS 3.0 or later. It also supports multiple languages like English, German, French & Spanish. Get it here.

[UPDATE: Version 1.0.3 was just released with album and single releases for Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway and Portugal. It also fixed an issue with Push Notifications.]
