It’s been a good year for the Splitter Critters team. Released to excellent reviews and much fanfare, the game gained traction before ultimately being awarded an Apple Design Award at this year’s WWDC. And with the release of iOS 11, Splitter Critters is adding another reason to love it: augmented reality levels.
Splitter Critters’ use of AR is very clever: instead of trying to make the entire world around you part of the gameplay, it puts the new, exclusive levels inside a box that you can place on a table or hang from the ceiling. It’s a diorama-like effect, allowing you to walk all the way around the box and see the front, sides, and back as well as the opening into the gameplay. You can even peer into the level and inspect its every detail.
Once you understand what you’re seeing with the new AR levels, you’ll quickly realize that this is the same old Splitter Critters that became an App Store favorite. Each level is exceptional and challenging, and you’ll need to think through every one to make sure you get it right. Even though there’s an undo button, be careful – you may make too many mistakes to correct.
The AR levels in Splitter Critters aren’t made to replace the traditional ones, but rather add a fresh experience to an already stellar app. While it’s yet to be determined if AR is the future of gaming, what we see from Splitter Critters is an awesome example of what is possible right now.
You can pick up Splitter Critters in the App Store for $2.99.
