As you may have understood reading MacStories, I’m in love with Twitter (I’m @storiesofmac) For this reason, I’m always searching for the best client around, hoping to find “that new one” which integrates all the features I would like to see in a Twitter app: slick UI, multi-timelines support, Growl, hashtags, url shortening and so on..

To help you in finding the best Twitter client around, here’s a list of 40 Twitter clients for your Mac. To download them, simply click on the link.

Obviously, I haven’t tested all of these apps, but I’m planning to write in-depth reviews for many of them.

Pwitter is a simple and elegant Twitter client for Mac, that is written in Cocoa. Graphics by Susumu Yoshida and HUD interface are the main elements of this app.

Twucket is a new Twitter client for Mac OS X Leopard.  It’s designed to use a minimal amount of screen real estate.

Bluebird

This is a great one. Designed by Laurent Baumann, Bluebird features a themable interface (just head over Macthemes forum to find hundreds of skins!), Growl support, hashtags, bookmarklets.

One of the best around.

Twangle is a lightweight Twitter client. It supports: Growl, Groups, Replies, Search, Tweets, Retweets, Direct messages, Interest matching, random contest winners, photo services (TwitPic), url shortening services (bit.ly).

Another famous client, Nambu offers a large variety of features, including other social networks support. Twitter support is well done, allowing the creation of groups, which is a great idea if you follow hundreds of people.

The applications is still in hard development, so be sure to check it out often.

Oh, this is the best one, in my opinion. Tweetie is simply amazing: smooth and fast animations, multi-timelines support, integrated twitter search, twitpic / yfrog support, integrated url shortening..There’s everything here. Everything, in a single, thin vertical sidebar.

Tweetie comes both in a free and “pro” , ad-free version. It may seem absurd, but the ads are so cool!

And here comes Twitterrific, one of the best (together with Tweetie, Nambu and Eventbox) nativa Mac clients. It features a dark interface and many options to having fun while tweeting.

One of the most famous apps (maybe the most famous), Tweetdeck features a multi-column black interface (not so Mac style, you might say..I agree with you) which seems dedicated to “power users”.  These columns are divided into Timeline, replies and DM, but you can even add more columns for sub-groups.

I’ve used it for 10 minutes and I switched back to Tweetie.

Enough said.

Not exactly a twitter client, Eventbox is a “social media” app, which integrates with variuos social networks (flickr, twitter, facebook) all in one box.

Twitter support is well done, with a slick interface and a useful three-panes view for composing tweets. The application is updated every week or so, with many features coming alongisde with every update.

In Conclusion

As you can see, there are dozens of Twitter applications to download, but there are few really worth to keep in our docks.

In my opinion, the best ones are Tweetie, Twitterrific, Nambu, Eventbox and Bluebird.

Sure, there are many apps that offer particular and unexpected features, but until someone won’t come out with a revolutionary idea, I’ll stick with these ones.
