It was yesterday when Realmac Software announced they bought EventBox from Cosmic Machine.
The app is going to have a new name, Socialite, and it will be released in November.
I had the chance to talk with the Realmac guys about the acquisition of Eventbox and the new features coming to Socialite.
Enjoy! ;)
Hi, can you please introduce yourself to MacStories readers?
We’re Realmac Software - a small Macintosh software company based in Brighton, England. We’ve been building Mac OS X applications since 2002, and you might have heard of our other products: RapidWeaver and LittleSnapper!
So, you’ve just bought Eventbox from the Cosmic Machine guys. How long have you been thinking about it?
Why did you decide to buy Eventbox? Couldn’t you develop a new app from scratch?
We’ve been looking at building an application similar to EventBox for some time: toying with ideas, but we’ve been so busy with our other applications that it wasn’t really on the agenda until recently! We’ve kept an eye on EventBox for quite a while now - and love The Cosmic Machine’s ideas for the application.
We acquired EventBox as we saw an opportunity to build on The Cosmic Machine’s great start with the application, and make it into the app we want to see!
Let’s talk about Socialite. Where does this name come from?
The Mac’s built-in dictionary describes a socialite as ‘[someone] who is well known in fashionable society and is fond of social activities and entertainment’, and we think it’s a pretty good match for a stylish Mac OS X social networking application!
Will Socialite be different from Eventbox? New features, new social networks…new icon?
For 1.0, Socialite will feature the options from EventBox - we’re going to be making some tweaks to the application of course, but new features will be added after we polish and launch the initial 1.0 release. As for a new icon, you’ll have to wait and see!
Do you plan to integrate support for Ember into Socialite?
There will be Ember support in the 1.0 - however it’s likely to just be support for the uploading of images for sharing via Twitter. We’re going to be looking, after 1.0 ships, into ways to truly integrate Ember into the application.
Do you have some early screenshots to share yet?
For now, we’ve published a few on the Socialite webpage: http://realmacsoftware.com/socialite/
However once launch gets nearer we may release couple more. As we’re still working on the application, we’ve not got any more screenshots to share just yet.
When should we expect Socialite to be released?
Socialite 1.0 will be available in November. We don’t have a specific date to announce yet, however when we do it’ll be announced via the @socialiteapp Twitter account as well as the Realmac Software blog.
