Beware The 200 Scalpers Outside New York’s 5th Ave. Store

If you’re still trying to get your hands on an iPad 2, you might want to avoid the 5th Avenue Apple Store in New York for now. The New York Post has a piece today on the issues with “scalpers” waiting outside the Apple Store for iPad 2 stock to become available again, and buy a large amount of units to sell later at a higher price in Asian grey markets and the United States as well. Apparently almost 200 of these Asian scalpers have been spotted around the 5th Ave. location, and they’re well organized with “leaders” telling them how many iPads to buy, which models, at which rate. These “leaders” were seen handing out $100 bills to the scalpers as if it was normal to get hundreds of iPads and put them in large bags to ship to China right away.

Prices for these iPad 2s range from $1700 to a whopping $2000 – you could get 4 iPads WiFi 16 GB for that price.

An Apple worker inside the store said he didn’t like what was going on – but he couldn’t do much about it.

“Listen, we all know what’s going on here. I find it sad and disgusting,” the worker said. “These people are preventing ordinary folks from getting their hands on an iPad.

The problems with scalpers and grey market isn’t new to Apple product launches. When the iPhone 4 went on sale last summer in the US and, later, in Europe, we saw the same thing happen with hundreds of people waiting in line outside the Apple Store just to buy devices to sell right away at a higher price, or export all the way back to mainland China.

The situation looks very bad this week as iPad 2s are nowhere to be seen, not even online, and these people are preventing regular, non-scalper customers from legitimately purchasing an iPad 2. Until Apple solves its problems with stock and availability, or releases the device in more countries as promised, we’re going to hear more and more stories like this.

7,200 iPad 2s Sold at Apple’s 5th Avenue NYC Store on Day 1

Apple has not officially released Day 1 sales for the iPad 2 but Business Insider is reporting that 7,200 iPad 2 devices were sold last Friday, March 11 at the flagship Manhattan store on 5th Avenue in New York City.

They claim a strong “well-connected source” released this number to them. To back up this number, there were over 1,100 people lined up this weekend, up from 700 when the original iPad came out about a year ago.

Apple has also reportedly stretched the waiting time for an iPad 2 to a 4 to 5 week wait now, it’s a good thing our Cody Fink made the hike to his local Apple store to purchase one for Federico and himself, but I am hoping that by next month I can buy one in person when I’m in Chicago. At least I hope Apple can reload and meet the more demands for the iPad 2.

Inside Apple’s Temporary Store in Austin

As you may have heard, Apple has been busy setting up a temporary store in Austin, TX for SXSW attendees willing to buy an iPad 2 during the days of the event. Following high demand for the new device and to make it easy for SXSW folks (which are many, and usually geeks) to buy a new iPad, Apple decided to take a temporary location to turn into a “popup shop” for two weeks.

In the video below posted by Cult of Mac, you can see the huge line formed this morning from people wanting to get their hands on the iPad or check out the new store. Some people were in line since 8 AM, others likely even before, but they weren’t exactly sure the Apple Store was going to be there as the company didn’t confirm anything until this morning, when Apple employees walked out cheering, telling customers to get in. Basically, that was a line made of hype and blog’s coverage of a rumor. It needs to be mentioned, though, that Apple’s black clothes are usually a good indication of a store being set up to accomodate a new launch.

Apple: Demand for iPad 2 Is “Amazing”

Apple: Demand for iPad 2 Is “Amazing”

Speaking to The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple, Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller said the consumers’ demand for the iPad is “amazing”.

Demand for the next generation iPad 2 has been amazing,” Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller, told The Loop. “We are working hard to get iPad 2 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible.”

Apple would not say exactly how many iPad 2s were sold over the weekend.

The launch of the iPad 2 saw long lines at Apple Stores across the US, delayed shipping times on Apple’s website and several retail stores sold out of units. A survey revealed 70% of iPad 2s are being sold to new customers, and an analyst predicted Apple would sell 600,000 copies over the launch weekend alone.

At this point, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see an Apple press release announcing 1 million iPads sold later this week.

Apple Sets Up Temporary Store in Austin for SXSW

The SXSW 2011 conference kicks off in Austin tomorrow, and the iPad 2 debuts in Apple Stores and authorized retails chains tomorrow at 5PM. Over the past weeks, I’ve read several blog posts and tweets from people attending SXSW this year unsure whether or not they should pull off the conference to stay home and buy an iPad 2, go to Austin and spend hours in line at the nearest Apple Store (thus missing SXSW events) or just go to Austin without getting an iPad 2. See, SXSW is a rather huge event where startups launch and geeks from all over the U.S. meet and the launch of the iPad 2 right in the middle of it could be a deal-breaker for many. Most of all because once you see some people at the conference with an iPad 2, if you’re an Apple geek you’re going to want one.

Apple thought about these issues as well, and in order to sell a truckloads of iPads to SXSW attendees they decided to set up a temporary store in downtown Austin. The plan came together quickly last Monday, when an Apple executive confirmed they wanted to set up a pop-up store for two weeks in the Scarbrough Building on Congress Avenue.

On Wednesday, construction workers were busy retrofitting the 5,000-square-foot space in the building, at Congress and West Sixth Street, that Apple will lease for two weeks. Black vinyl sheeting covered the windows fronting Congress.

The store will be ready tomorrow and we guess they’ll be selling a lot of iPads to people attending SXSW. That’s just a clever more and, although it won’t stay there for long, we’re sure the store in Austin will be a great experience for all those at SXSW willing to get their hands on the latest gadget from Cupertino. If you have photos of the new store, the Tips box in the sidebar is just a click away. [via Statesman]

Apple Removing 32 Games and 3rd Party Mac Products from Retail Stores

According to The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple, Apple is in the process of removing a series of boxed games and third-party Mac products from its retail stores to make room for other services that require space and additional employees. Namely, Apple has apparently decided to cut 32 games off the shelves and products like printers, hard drives and scanners to leave plenty of room for employees to work on the “personalized setups”, a service launched in January that allows customers to go through a friendly Mac setup process together with an Apple Store employee that will guide them through the first OS X installation, iTunes account creation and Mail setup.

Due to the popularity of the personalized service, Apple is expanding it and will need to make more room for employees to work with customers.

Among the products that will no longer be displayed in the retail stores are printers, scanners and possible some hard drives. These peripherals will still be stocked in the store and available if a customer requests them.

At the point of sale, the Apple salesperson will still recommend the customer purchase one of those peripherals if they feel it fits in with the customer’s purchase.

With the removal of 32 games from the Apple Store, the number of games being displayed on the shelves will go down to around 8 per store, according to The Loop. It also appears that employees will being suggesting customers to go look for games in the Mac App Store – again, a very easy way to promote the new digital online store in the heavily trafficked retail locations. Apple has also recently stopped selling boxed copies of MobileMe, which is now exclusively available online and it’s rumored to be revamped soon with a free version for iOS and Mac users.

Apple Confirms: Two New Italian Stores to Open Soon, One in Sicily

A new job listing appeared on Apple’s website and spotted by Italian website Macity [Google Translation] confirms the rumors we’ve been hearing about a Store opening soon in southern Italy, most specifically in Sicily. The lack of Apple retail stores in southern Italy has been controversial for years, with the company clearly focusing on opening Stores from the region Lazio (where Rome is located) and above.

According to local newspapers and the usual speculation, the new Store is set to open by the end of summer 2011. The exact location is still unclear, although people familiar with the matter claim the store will open in the city of Catania. With another job listing, Apple also confirmed another store will open soon in Bologna.

It’s good to see Apple opening stores in Italy that aren’t in Rome or Milan. Now, where’s my Viterbo Apple Store? (probably will never happen)
