Apple TV Under The Hood

Apple TV Under The Hood

Looking at an OS dump doesn’t always translate to the final live interaction and exploration experience but it does offer tantalizing hints as to what is to come and what will be possible for those willing to start programming and hacking. In this case, Apple TV’s sneak peak provides two promises. First, that the system itself will be somewhat customizable and programmable for people who wish to extend its use beyond the built-in features. Second, that we’re looking at the future of OS X installs. Apple TV’s iOS shows that non-mobile devices without touch screens can leverage iOS’s newer, more modern frameworks without sacrificing general computability.

10.7 can’t be announced soon enough.

Fox News Reviews The Apple TV

Fox News Reviews The Apple TV

So here’s how it works. Let’s say I’m out watching an episode of Star Trek on my iPad. When I walk in my front door I can continue watching that same episode on my ginormous HDTV with the flick of a finger, and vice versa. How handy is that?

Apple told me the company has opened this feature to third-party developers, and  that’s where my imagination runs wild. Think of the possibilities! Imagine the apps you could be flicking back and forth across all of your iDevices: NPR, Netflix, YouTube, MLB, Hulu, Internet Radio, Pandora, the list goes on. AirPlay could be the most important Apple announcement in years.

Here’s to hoping for a great Apple TV commercial featuring AirPlay.

Two New iPhones and Unknown New Device Spotted in iOS 4.1 for Apple TV

The iOS 4.1 firmware for the new Apple TV is turning out to be quite a source of surprises. After the new Remote icon and external storage support, 9to5mac found out that 2 new iPhones and a brand new device are referenced in the firmware’s USBDeviceConfiguration .plist file.

We know that the iPhone 4 has always been known as iPhone 3,1, but we’re seeing iPhone 3,2 and 3,3 here. White iPhone? Verizon iPhone? Redesigned-antenna version? Steve Jobs knows. A 20547 unknown device is also referenced. Yes, you can start speculating now. Read more

More TV Executives Weigh In on 99-Cent TV Show Rentals

Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman similarly cited the rental pricing as the primary issue, noting that it “doesn’t work” for the media company that owns such cable channels as Comedy Central and Nickelodeon.

“The 99-cent rental is not a good price point,” said Viacom Inc. Chief Executive Philippe Dauman at the conference, which was hosted by Goldman Sachs. “It doesn’t work for us.”

Mr. Dauman noted that Viacom, which owns cable networks like Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, invests heavily to produce its content and plans to increase that investment.

“We value our content a lot,” he said. “We don’t think Apple has it quite right yet.”

Also, delays.

Apple TV Delayed

The new Apple TV just got delayed to mid-October. As noticed by TechCrunch, the estimated shipping date has changed from September to 2-3- weeks, which puts the device in October. Apple is also issuing refunds for expedited shipping.

Is Apple having some problems convincing TV execs to jump on board? Or is it just a delay in the manufacturing process? We’ll see.
