New Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs To Start Shipping February 20th

The most probable next generation processor for MacBooks will start shipping on February 20th. The new Intel core i5 and i7 processors, based on the Sandy Bridge architecture shown off at CES, comes in flavors ranging from 1.4 GHz to 2.7 GHz, drawing 17 watts to 35 watts respectively under load. The new processors could be used to update Apple’s MacBook, 13” MacBook Pro, and 15” MacBook Pro line, while quad-core Sandy Bridge CPUs would populate Apple’s higher end MacBooks and desktops. Apple’s MacBook and 13” MacBook Pro continue to utilize Core 2 Duo processors, and may receive a Sandy Bridge update later this year.

What Is This Psychedelic Macintosh Helmet?

Matt “Kid Chameleon” Loniero is an audio engineer / graphic designer / DJ who creates visual experiences for live performances of other DJs and bands. He also likes to experiment with stuff. A lot. And his latest experiment, a Macintosh Plus helmet with an embedded iPad connected to a Bluetooth keyboard, is one of the coolest things we’ve seen in a while.

The visualizer helmet is made of a Macintosh Plus bought on eBay, which had its inner parts removed. A bicycle helmet was then placed inside the case together with an iPad. In the live performance you can watch below, this was the setup:

For this specific performance, we used an iMac connected to several projectors and televisions around the room and above the bar. The iMac was running Resolume Avenue and the video was triggered using a MIDI keyboard and a Wiimote. The iPad was connected to a bluetooth keyboard which allowed me to press play on the iPad video and press the B button on the Wiimote at the same time Kid Chameleon started his set.

The Mac That Saved Apple

I remember covering that crowded midnight rollout at a Palo Alto, California, store, and talking with then Apple hardware-engineering honcho Jon Rubenstein, who was beaming like a proud papa. An exhausted proud papa, to be sure, but grinning ear-to-ear nonetheless as he watched a long line of purchasers plop down $1,299 for the latest shiny-shiny, and lug their big boxes out of the store, smiling as broadly as Rubenstein himself.

Rubenstein told me that the iMac was going to redefine consumer computing. He was right.

Reminds me a lot of the iPad announcement and launch. But this time Apple doesn’t need to be saved.

AMD Fusion Coming To iMacs and Mac Pros?

Hardware Upgrade reports that AMD showed a couple of slides yesterday during the 2010 Financial Analyst Day which suggest that Apple might be included as a partner for future AMD Fusion releases. In the slides (which you can see below, or jump to the full presentation here) iMacs and Mac Pros are the Apple computers AMD’s slides are referring to.

As Hardware Upgrade also notes, rumors about deeper Apple / AMD collaborations have been floating around for months. Apple, of course, hasn’t confirmed any of them.

The iMac G4 Lamp

Unfortunately, the following item has already been sold on Etsy– at the price of $125. And it’s no surprise, considering that it’s a desk lamp made out of recycled parts of an old iMac G4, the iMac that made history.

Perhaps Steve and Jony bought it. I wanted one, but I think I’m just going to wait for the Mac Pro closet. [via Giz]

Sintek Denies iMac Touch Rumors

A few days ago tech news website Digitimes reported that, according to their sources, Sintek Productions had already sent Apple some sample of a 20-inch capacitive touch screen to use in a future iteration of the iMac. Digitimes claimed:

Sintek Photronics has reportedly sent samples of projected capacitive touch panels to Apple to be incorporated in the latest iMac all-in-one (AIO) PC, according to industry sources.

The new iMac is rumored to have a good vertical and horizontal viewing angle, and its projected capacitive touch panel will adopt a one-glass solution, which integrates the touch sensor and cover glass, to reduce thickness and weight.

A Docking Station For Your iMac, iPad and iPhone

I bought an iMac a few weeks ago, and I had to re-think my workspace to fit a new desktop computer and two docks (iPhone and iPad) on a single desk. It turned out pretty good, and I also managed to hide the cables (USB, FireWire) behind the iMac’s screen and the external hard drive. I wish I could install something like the concept below, though.
