Apple Testing An iPhone With A Slide Out Keyboard, But Will They Sell It?

Apple.pro reports this afternoon that Apple may be testing three different iPhone protoypes (including the mini iPhone we’ve been hearing about), one of which is a model with a slide out keyboard. The translation to English is very rough:

There are three iPhone5 prototype
one is a sliding cover which
Is the introduction of the keyboard after the side cover

Being a fan of physical keyboards (especially those on the Palm Pre), an iPhone five with a portrait slider might be enough for me to switch to the next-gen iPhone. Rumors aside, would it be wise for Apple to differentiate with an entire iPhone family to compete against Android, HP, and other competitors? We’re skeptical that Apple would actually launch an iPhone with a physical keyboard, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Also in the mix is a rumored upgrade to the camera, getting a bump to 8 megapixels from the iPhone 4’s current 5 megapixel camera. The report also notes that the transition to the next iPhone will be similar to the transition from the 3G to the 3GS: different guts with the same basic hardware design.

Rumor: Apple Prototyping A 2.3” iPhone At $200 Without Contract? Customers To Choose Own Network?

With the tech world still suffocating from iPad 2 rumors and John Gruber’s predictive iPad 3 lineup bomb, Bloomberg reports this afternoon that Apple may be planning to rekindle their iPhone line with new models to better compete with Android. What’s in the mix? A rumored Apple iPhone prototype is said to be a third smaller than the current iPhone 4, meaning it would be on par with HP’s Veer at approximately 2.3 inches diagonally. How do you undercut the competition? By finally offering American consumers the option to purchase a $200 smartphone without an obligatory contract.

Apple can sell it at a low price mainly because the smartphone will use a processor, display and other components similar to those used in the current model, rather than pricier, more advanced parts that will be in the next iPhone, the person said. Component prices typically drop over time.

Whether or not you care to dig into the gigahertz war in smartphone processor technology, the current hardware for the iPhone 4 would still be relevant for the next year, despite Android handsets launching with dual-core processor. iOS, being extremely efficient would fly with a 1GHz processor pushing pixels on a 2.3 inch display. With the same great camera, the baby iPhone would be an excellent edition to Apple’s lineup when paired with larger display of an iPad. (Personally, I don’t think these smaller displays are just for tweens.) The phone would be free if purchased on contract.

Apple Adds iPhone 5 Suppliers, Launch “During Summer At The Earliest”

We’ve heard rumors about the next-generation iPhone that suggest the device might get NFC capabilities, a dual-core processor and a brand new redesign, but we didn’t know much about the actual release date. Apple usually unveils new iPhone models at the WWDC in June, with US launch to follow after a few weeks; according to a report from Digitimes this morning, launch of the iPhone 5 will happen “during summer at the earliest”.

Apple has also added new suppliers to the iPhone 5 production chain:

Foxconn will become the iPhone 5’s new earphone supplier. Japan’s Foster was the previous supplier, but a strengthening yen has spurred Apple to look for more cost-effective sources, the report said, noting that related orders are estimated at NT$5 billion (US$171.7 million). Foxlink will produce earphone jack sockets for the iPhone 5.

With a shortage of HDI boards, Apple has also newly added GCE as a supplier, but will continue to source from Compeq Manufacturing and Unimicron Technology as well.

In October, rumors suggested the iPhone 5 had hit “EVT” testing stage.

iPad 2 with SD Slot, Higher Res Screen? iPhone 5 To Feature Apple A5 CPU?

A report posted tonight by Engadget reveals several details of future Apple products scheduled for a 2011 launch, such as the iPad 2, the iPhone 5 and the successor to the second-generation Apple TV. Engadget’s track record with Apple scoops has been very solid, and the details are very interesting.

According to sources close to the website, the iPad 2 will feature a higher resolution screen similar to the iPhone 4’s Retina Display, but won’t be have the same DPI. In the past, we’ve heard rumors about the next-generation iPad featuring a display with higher pixel density, and we actually spotted higher resolution images in the iBooks app for iPad months ago. Those images suggested a 2x increase in resolution. Engadget also claims the device will have a SD card slot – that bigger hole we’ve seen in cases and mockups recently wasn’t a speaker, apparently. The iPad 2 is set to come out in April, won’t feature a USB port and will be “lighter”. Read more

Rumor: iPhone 5 with “Apple A8” Dual-Core Processor?

According to the latest rumors coming this morning from Digitimes and Apple Daily, the next generation iPhone, the “iPhone 5”, will adopt Qualcomm’s chipsets, which use substrates from Kinsus IC. Similar rumors surfaced months ago after Intel acquisition of chipset maker Infineon.

According to this report, the iPhone 5 is set to come out in the second quarter of 2011 (announced at the WWDC, we guess?) and will include a new “A8 processor”. Currently, the iPhone 4 is based on the “Apple A4” processor, which is a combination of a ARM Cortex-A8 CPU and a GPU. From the reports of this morning, as also noted by Slashgear, it is unclear whether these rumors of a new A8 processor are pointing to an upgrade of the current Cortex-A8 or a new, rebranded Apple version of the CPU that might suggest a move to a dual core processor, like two Apple A4s combined.

Today’s reports don’t tell much about the details of this new processor, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple taking existing technology and rebrand it to their own name like they did with the Apple A4. Furthermore, a dual-core processor in the iPhone 5 would help Apple stay relevant considering what manufacturers are doing on Android with the Tegra2.

Rumor: iPhone 5 Taken Apart, Shown Naked On Video?

The Boy Genius Report has uncovered an iPhone video from Youtube via Global Direct Parts, who claim to have the parts for the next generation iPhone. If this report is true, internally some of the changes could be speed bumps (such as we saw between the 3G and 3GS). On the outside, the steel band will see a relocation of the dividers that separate the antennas. Externally, we don’t imagine a visual difference between the iPhone 4, and the iPhone 5 (4G?). There’s been slight internal retooling of the next generation iPhone antenna, which may give customers with dropped calls some relief. Lastly, we can expect incremental improvements all around the board, but as you’ll see in the video after the break, we haven’t seen everything yet.

Meet The First iPhone 5…Clone

Is there anything better than waking up to find out that Apple has announced the grand opening of the Mac App Store? How about an iPhone 5?

Easy, folks. It’s a clone. Demoed in a video in Chinese, Taiwanese, or something. Whatever. Still, as 9to5mac suggests, the thing is probably running Android with some custom iPhone skin on it, so you don’t have to worry about this being a real iPhone with a different case. The truth is, someone actually took the time to imagine his own iPhone 5 and build it.

I don’t know if the device it’s up for sale. What I’m sure of is, I don’t want the iPhone 5 to look like this. Video below.[via] Read more

Rumor: iPhone 5 To Hook Up With Any Mac via NFC Technology

We covered NFC (Near Field Communication) technology before: many rumors and patents surfaced in the past detailing how Apple might be interested in implementing NFC in future iPhones to turn them into “digital wallets” capable of doing things such as on-the-go instant payments. While NFC cellphone-based payments are already reality in Japan and there are a couple of applications that can already do that on the iPhone without NFC (like Visa payWare), we have been speculating about Apple deploying its own solution for months now.

According to new report by Cult of Mac from an anonymous source, Apple might implement NFC in the iPhone 5, but not just for mobile “iWallet” payments. The source claims Apple has been working on a solution to let iPhone users carry their whole OS X experience around and use any Mac as if it was their own computer through an iPhone-based transfer system. Neat stuff. Read more
