iPod Touch Turned Into DIY Phone With Original Packaging

Lifehacker has a knack for showcasing crazy DIY projects like this one: an iPod touch turned pPhone (p is for plastic) thanks to Apple’s original packaging. By coordinating a pair headphones to create an earpiece, he uses VoIP to make calls over WiFi, and some creative modding to get his solution to work as third party microphones crapped out or simply didn’t function. We think it’s a great idea: you have a free hardcover case on the cheap, and you’re not paying a contract with AT&T or Verizon. All that’s left is to draw the Apple logo on the back with a sharpie.

Also: I wish I was born with those amazing headphone tying skills.

OneLessDrop: Keep Cables From Sliding Off Your Desk

Annoying scenario I experience every single day: my MacBook Pro is on my desk. It’s charging. The iPhone is on the desk as well, charging. Something happens – like my dog, walking under my desk and touching the cables – and boom: the iPhone drops off my desk while still attached to the cable, my MacBook disconnects from the MagSafe. This is very, very annoying. And you know, the iPhone might break, too.

OneLessDrop is an interesting Kickstarter project that’s aimed at keeping your cables in place, avoiding the risk of letting them slide off your desk or coffee table. The widget is made of recycled aluminum (we approve) and has enough room for supporting iOS cables, or the usual MagSafe power cord. It looks very nice (at least from the mockups posted on Kickstarter) and pledges start at $25 with free shipping in the US.

OneLessDrop is a solid block of recycled and recyclable aluminum - made from things like discarded wheels and engine blocks. Once extruded to shape, each OneLessDrop is hand finished (brushing or blasted finish TBD), then anodized for durability. Non-slip pads OneLessDrop ample grip.

Demo video is available on the Kickstarter page, together with more photos and a detailed description from the creator of the OneLessDrop. [via The Brooks Review]

We don’t know how many Verizon iPhones were available for pre-order last night, but Verizon Wireless has just announced that they break any previous sales record in 2 hours. This is a new record in Verizon’s online pre-order history, and the company seems to be pretty pleased with the results:

In just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history.

iAds Twice as Effective as TV Says Apple, Campbell’s

A Nielsen study shows iPhone users are paying attention, while TV views – eh, not so much. iAds started around 7 months ago on our iDevices and now there are effectiveness studies showing up, this one from Campbell’s (the soup maker).

People exposed to one of Campbell’s iAds were more than twice as likely to recall it than those who had seen a Campbell’s TV ad. This five-week Nielsen study showed that consumers who saw an iAd remembered Campbell’s brand five times more often than TV ad respondents and the ad’s  message three times more often. iAd respondents were four times as likely to to purchase Campbell’s than the TV viewers. Users also liked the ad five times more than the TV commercial. Read more

Verizon To Throttle Data Speeds, Compress Images & Videos To Keep Its Network Up

Early reviews of the Verizon iPhone were clear about one point: it’s a great phone, but data is slower than AT&T’s network. The Verizon iPhone gathered good phone call points among reviewers, but each one of them mentioned the fact that, both in download and upload, AT&T was faster. And it looks like things are only getting worse.

As reported by BGR, to handle the flock of new iPhone users on its network Verizon will begin throttling data speeds for the top 5% data users:

Verizon Wireless strives to provide customers the best experience when using our network, a shared resource among tens of millions of customers. To help achieve this, if you use an extraordinary amount of data and fall within the top 5% of Verizon Wireless data users we may reduce your data throughput speeds periodically for the remainder of your then current and immediately following billing cycle to ensure high quality network performance for other users at locations and times of peak demand.

But it gets even worse than data throttling. To keep its network capacity at an optimal level for customers, Verizon will compress images and videos over the air (to save bandwidth) before they’re served to a device. Here’s what the PDF memo says:

These techniques include caching less data, using less capacity, and sizing the video more appropriately for the device. The optimization process is agnostic to the content itself and to the website that provides it. While we invest much effort to avoid changing text, image, and video files in the compression process and while any change to the file is likely to be indiscernible, the optimization process may minimally impact the appearance of the file as displayed on your device.

While it’s likely that these “optimizations” (we think “compressions” is a more appropriate term) will happen only during the first period of Verizon iPhone on sale, it’s still inconvenient for customers to not have access to high-quality media on 3G. Pre-Order’s for Verizon iPhone Now Live

As confirmed yesterday by Apple, Pre-Orders for the Verizon iPhone 4 are now live on Apple’s website here and also on Verizon’s site here.  Be quick though if you want one, demand is expected to be high and orders will be fulfilled on a first come, first served basis.

If you are purchasing from the Apple Store you have to be an existing Verizon user and you have to sign up to the two year contract.

For the full pricing details head over here.

UPDATE: People on Twitter are noting that the Verizon site is having difficulties and crashing. It’s really hit and miss, some on Twitter have had seamless experience, others having errors. Perhaps try the Apple site, no reports of it going down, also some are recommending to avoid Firefox which seems to be having issues with Verizon’s site.

UPDATE 2: More and more people are having troubles with Verizon pre-orders, some have then tried going through Apple and it has worked without issue. Highly recommend people to try through Apple here.

The Verizon iPhone 4 is being sold for $199 for the 16 GB model and $299 for the 32 GB model with a two-year contract. Sales in Apple retail stores and 2,000 Verizon Wireless stores will begin on Thursday, February 10th and 7 AM — just like AT&T did for the iPhone 4 last year.
