Hardmac has come up with a snapshot of the next generation iPod touch in an acrylic case, claiming they’ve got an unnamed reliable source. Having a pretty good track record after exposing last year’s iPod nano cam, I’m crossing my fingers that this is the actual iPod touch we’ll be seeing in the not-too-distant future.

The iPod touch 4 Exposed?
Apple’s Exercise in Engineering
I’ve been curious as to why certain Apple projects aren’t updated immediately as new products hit. Let’s take Apple’s Remote application for example. It’s something so simple yet so useful you think Apple would have updated the little guy for the Retina Display right? And just think about the potential of navigating your iTunes library on the giant iPad screen! None of these things have happened, and a lot of us feel that Apple has forgotten about some of their App Store utilities.
Today, we have an explanation.

Next-Gen iPod Touch Spotted In The Wild, Again
I really don’t know what’s wrong with these people losing prototypes. I mean, are they actually losing them, or intentionally dropping them to see them end up on blogs and secretly rejoice for what they did? We’ll never know.
The Welikesmall iPod Touch Wall [Video]
We often come across cool implementations of Apple’s technology, great looking hacks and awesome mods - this one is no exception. A wall made of 20 iPod Touches running a custom app based on the GameKit framework, all hooked up to a Django / Python web app server.
“Our current iPhone Application allows for 4 different modes, a screen saver mode, a full image split mode (the controlling iPod looks for an image and then the server executes a script to split that image among all 20 iPods), a single image grid mode (the controlling iPod tells the server to give a random image to each iPhone), and a hybrid mode which displays all three. In addition, the server is always checking to ensure that each iPod is synched.”

FaceTime for iPod touch Details
We’ve talked about the possibilities of FaceTime on the iPod touch before thanks to the initial rumors and the Boy Genius Report, but this evening 9 to 5 Mac has the skinny on how exactly Apple plans to implement the currently phone-based feature.
Boy Genius Claims that FaceTime is Coming to iPod and iPad
We pretty much figured that FaceTime would eventually end up on the iPod relatively soon, but we didn’t think we’d hear millings about the iPad just yet (considering it doesn’t have a front facing camera). Sure the iPad would make the perfect FaceTime device – but this leads us to ponder whether Apple will release an updated model this Fall.
Questions aside, Boy Genius Report does ask a valid question: how the heck can you call an iPod touch or iPad without a phone number? The answer lies in your Apple ID. Using your email address (which I do not like the idea of at all), people will be able to make FaceTime calls to your device. Kind of like how Textie on the iPhone and iPod touch works. Push Notifications will alert you to calls, and Boy Genius Report admits that there’d have to be some minor changes in iOS 4.x to make it happen. Chalk another one up on the rumor mill kids - this one is pretty good.
