Apple To Offer $100 iTunes Credit Instead Of An iPod For Back To School Promotion?

Apple’s ‘Back to School’ promotion is scheduled to start up again sometime very soon and if reports from today come true, the promotion could be a bit different to years past. 9to5 Mac is reporting that when a student purchases a MacBook this year, they will receive a $100 worth of iTunes credit rather than what has previously been an iPod Touch in recent years.

Launching three months before the September iPod event Apple seems to have every year, the ‘Back to School’ promotion was largely viewed as one way of clearing out iPod inventory ahead of the refresh in September. Previous rumors of this year’s promotion suggested that Apple was set to offer $200 off the price of an iPad.  As always, regardless of the bonus offered during the promotion, students get an education discount on the cost of any Mac they purchase.

Want to Host Your Own iTunes Store? That’ll Cost You $1.3 Billion a Year.

If you were to run your iTunes Store out of your basement, just think about how much it would cost to serve Apple’s 225 million accounts on file. With 15 Billion iTunes song downloads, 14 Billion app downloads, and with those downloads soon to be happening simultaneously between your Mac, iPad, and iPhone thanks to iCloud, Horace Diedu writes that we can deduce a lot about how much it costs Apple to keep the operation running smoothly. “Since we know something about the average price of songs and apps, and we know the split between developers and Apple (and roughly between music labels and Apple) we can get a rough estimate of the amount Apple retains to run its store.”

Diedu took the margin of apps and song downloads per month (assuming if the app store runs ‘break even’) and added them together; the margin consists of what Apple pays out to content owners before processing, delivery, and maintenance costs. He concludes that it costs Apple $133 million a month, or $1.3 billion which is paid towards keeping everything operating smoothly. Remember, we’re not calculating the gross margin, but rather the amount Apple is left with after paying developers, record labels, and publishers, before pouring that cash into their operating fees. The leftovers, Deidu concludes, would go towards capacity increases, perhaps in Apple’s new datacenter.

iTunes 10.3.1 Released

Following reports of iTunes 10.3 having some issues with iOS devices in the syncing process, Apple released iTunes 10.3.1 a few hours ago, quite possibly trying to fix the errors reported in the original 10.3 version made available earlier this week. After the WWDC keynote Apple seeded iTunes 10.5 beta to developers to enable sync with devices running iOS 5, but iTunes 10.3 was also released to the public to bring initial iCloud features like basic support for iTunes in the Cloud in the United States, Automatic Downloads, as well as a refreshed UI.

iTunes 10.3.1 is available for Mac and Windows machines, and can be downloaded from Apple’s support site of the Software Update control panel. The official changelog doesn’t include any details on what’s been updated, simply reporting the new features introduced in iTunes 10.3.


Hands-On with iTunes’ Purchase History for Apps, Songs, and Books


iTunes 10.3 was released a couple of hours ago and one of the new features it brings is a ‘Purchased’ screen that lists every song, app and book that you have ever downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store or iBookstore. You can get to the ‘Purchased’ screen simply by going to the iTunes Store homepage and clicking “Purchased” from the sidebar on the right of your screen(see below), it should also have a ‘New’ tag beside it, at which point it will take you to ‘Purchased’ screen.

The ‘Purchased’ screen is a really  handy feature to easily and quickly find a previous purchase and instantly download it or even download all of your previous purchases with just one click. The feature, which is also included in iOS 5, is part of Apple’s iCloud, which was unveiled at yesterday’s WWDC keynote. The ‘Purchased’ screen also gives you some fairly powerful tools to find the exact purchase you want, either from just searching, only displaying items not downloaded to your iTunes library or just list the purchases alphabetically.

iTunes 10.3 Available for Download

A few hours later than initially expected after Apple updated the official page to show a new version number, iTunes 10.3 was finally made available for download last night, while developers were already able to install the new iTunes 10.5 beta from the Dev Center. iTunes 10.3, however, brings to the public new iCloud-related features unveiled by Apple yesterday, such as iTunes in the Cloud “beta” to push songs across all your devices (but still no mention of iTunes Match), Automatic Downloads, and previous purchases – a handy new functionality to see all the apps and songs you purchases from Apple’s iTunes / App Store and re-download them at any time.

From the changelog:

  • Introducing iTunes in the Cloud beta. The music you purchase in iTunes appears automatically on all your devices. You can also download your past iTunes purchases. Where you want, when you want.
  • Automatic Downloads. Purchase music from any device or computer and automatically download a copy to your Mac and iOS devices.
  • Download Previous Purchases. Download your past music purchases again at no additional cost. Your purchases are available in the iTunes Store on your Mac or in the iTunes app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer on the iTunes Store.
  • iTunes 10.3 also adds Books to the iTunes Store, where you can discover and buy your favorite books on your computer and automatically download them to iBooks on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. This version also allows you to use Automatic Downloads with apps and books or download previously purchased apps and books from your computer or iOS device.

iBookstore Finally Comes To iTunes

With an update to the iTunes Store, Apple is now finally allowing iPhone and iPad users to download iBooks on their Macs, and send them to their iOS devices. Announced with a banner that just went live in the iTunes Store homepage, the new Books section is available here and, as you would expect from the feature iOS users have been asking for almost a year now, it’s simply the iBookstore available on the desktop.

You can browse Staff Favorites, add items to your Wish List, check out the “Best of the month” and “popular pre-orders”. Everything seen on the iBookstore for iOS has been ported to a new section in the iTunes Store for desktop computers, which doesn’t require an iTunes update. With the new “Automatic Downloads” functionality that went live earlier today, you’ll be able to buy a book on your computer and instantly see it available on your iPhone or iPad with a download happening in the background.

At the moment of writing this, there doesn’t seem to be a desktop iBooks app, which was rumored in the past months to be in the works as an alternative for the iOS ebook reader. Check out more screenshots below. Read more


iTunes 10.5 Beta for Mac Released

Alongside the first beta of iOS 5, Apple also released iTunes 10.5 beta for Mac – which is required to sync iOS 5 devices and enable more iCloud-related features than iTunes 10.3, also waiting for release.

As the changelog confirms, the new iTunes enables compatibility with devices running iOS 5 – we’ll update this story with more details as they come in.

iTunes In the Cloud: Free, Or Scan Your Library and Match Songs at $24.99 Per Year

Once again, the rumors were real – Apple has just introduced iTunes In The Cloud at its WWDC keynote. The new system will allow you to get access to all your previously purchased songs on device from a new Purchased tab in the iTunes Store (similar to Purchased apps in the new App Store) and download items at any time. More importantly, the new cloud will allow you to push a single purchase to multiple devices at once – a first in the music industry, Steve Jobs said.

But the real new feature was unveiled on stage as a “one more thing” by Apple CEO. As previous rumors and speculation suggested, iTunes in the cloud would be more than simple pushing and updating of songs from the iTunes Store. Besides the usual sync (and the new WiFi one?) and iTunes Store, Apple will offer a new iTunes Match service that scans your music library, and matches it with Apple’s catalogue of 18 million songs in the cloud. iTunes Match comes at a price: $24.99 per year.

In additions, iTunes Match will upgrade the songs to 256k AAC DRM free. And it costs just $24.99 per year. So if you’ve got a bunch of music that you didn’t get from iTunes, you can get it in the cloud. Now if you look at some competitors, you’ll be surprised. We scan and match, the other guys you have to upload the whole collection. The other guys only have web apps. For 5000 songs, Amazon is $50. Even up to 20,000 songs, we’re one flat price.

The new iTunes in the cloud will be available as developer beta today.

Update: it looks like “some music features” of iCloud will be available in the US only while in beta. We assume the new iTunes Match service will be US-only during this period. From Apple’s official iCloud page:

iTunes and Facebook Credit To Be Transferable For Upcoming Ubisoft Game

AllThingsD is this morning reporting that Facebook credits and iTunes credit will “play nice” with each other, with some minimal transferability of credits set to occur. The news comes from Chris Early, Ubisoft VP of Digital publishing who told AllThingsD that Apple and Facebook have agreed to honor “currency purchased on each other’s platforms for the same game”.

This system of “currency” interoperability will apparently be first demonstrated with Ubisoft’s upcoming Ghost Recon game that will be released on multiple platforms, including on Facebook and mobile devices. Early says that the “new pact” would allow a customer who purchased $20 worth of Ghost Recon credits on Facebook, also have $20 worth of credits for their iPhone version of Ghost Recon, with Facebook receiving the 30% cut of revenue. The reverse would work too, but in either case only the platform that initially received the $20 would receive that 30% revenue cut.

Ubisoft would, according to Early, be the party responsible for managing users’ credit balance across the platform. This may just be Apple and Facebook approving the practice of in-game credits being transferable across platforms, but it certainly opens the slight possibility that iTunes credit could one day be used within the Facebook platform and vice versa.
